About SelfHostHero: Your Data. Your Server. Your Rules.

Welcome to SelfHostHero. We are here for one simple reason: to help you take back control of your digital life from Big Tech.

We believe that you shouldn’t have to pay a monthly subscription to rent access to your own photos, files, and media. We believe in open-source software, privacy-first architecture, and the absolute freedom that comes with building your own homelab. Whether it is a €30 budget Zigbee hub or a hardcore multi-node Proxmox cluster, the philosophy remains the same: Your Data. Your Server. Your Rules.

Who We Are (And Who We Aren’t)

The tech internet is broken. It is flooded with AI-generated buying guides, surface-level spec sheet comparisons, and “reviews” written by people who have never physically touched the hardware they are recommending.

SelfHostHero is built differently. We are actual sysadmins, homelabbers, and tinkerers. When we review a NAS, a mini PC, or a piece of networking gear, we do it the hard way:

  • Real Hardware, Real Tests: We put the hardware on our desk. We plug in the watt meter to measure the actual idle power consumption. We open the chassis and check the NVMe slots.
  • Zero PR Nonsense: If a manufacturer includes soft screws that strip on the first turn, we document it. If their stock operating system feels unfinished and breaks Docker containers, we will tell you to wipe it on day two.
  • The Homelab Focus: We don’t just review basic consumer setups. We push hardware to its limits. We test bare-metal hypervisors like Proxmox VE, advanced storage systems like TrueNAS SCALE (ZFS), and containerized deployments using Docker.

Who Is This Site For?

SelfHostHero is designed to bridge the gap between absolute beginners and seasoned IT veterans. Our content is split into two distinct tracks:

  1. The Self-Hosted Beginner: If you are tired of Google Drive price hikes and want to set up your first Pi-hole or basic network-attached storage (NAS), we have step-by-step guides that strip away the intimidating jargon. We will hold your hand through the basics.
  2. The Hardcore Homelabber: If you are looking to pass through an Intel iGPU to an LXC container in Proxmox, optimize your 2.5GbE network bridge, or deploy a self-hosted Nextcloud instance with a PostgreSQL backend, you will find the deep-dive technical tutorials you need here.

Privacy First. Always.

We practice what we preach. We do not use invasive trackers from Google or Facebook on this site. Our analytics are completely privacy-friendly, self-hosted, and anonymized. We respect your data as much as we respect our own.

Join the Revolution

Building a homelab is a journey. Hardware breaks, software crashes, and Docker containers refuse to start. But the moment you spin up your own self-hosted infrastructure and realize you no longer rely on external clouds, it is worth every second.

Grab a server. Wipe the drive. Let’s build something yours.
